Can you sell cruise tickets? In most cases, no — not to a stranger, and not for cash on the side. A cruise booking belongs to the named guests in a specific stateroom, and the cruise line controls who those guests are. Here is what the lines actually allow.

How Cruise Lines Treat a Name Change

LineWhat its own help pages say
Carnival Cruise LineA name change is the cancellation of one guest and the addition of a new guest. An original guest must remain on the booking; otherwise it is treated as a full stateroom cancellation and the cancellation penalties apply. Restricted or non-refundable fares follow the promotion’s terms.
Norwegian Cruise LineName substitutions and departure-date changes for cruise, land, air and add-ons are considered cancellations and may be subject to cancellation fees.

Other lines publish similar rules in their booking terms. The common threads: the line decides, fees or cancellation penalties may apply, the new guest must meet every document requirement, and the change has to be made by the line or the booking agency — never informally between guests.

Why You Cannot Simply Hand Over a Cruise

Manifests and passports

Lines send guest manifests to authorities and match each guest to a travel document at check-in. An unlisted person does not board.

Prices tied to people

Military, senior, resident, past-guest and kids fares belong to the person who qualified. A new guest may not qualify for the same fare.

Air and extras

Flights, transfers, prepaid drinks and excursions booked through the line usually have their own change rules.

Insurance

Travel insurance covers the insured person, not whoever takes their place.

Your Real Options

  • Substitute one guest where the line allows it, keeping an original guest on the booking.
  • Move the sailing to new dates — sometimes cheaper than cancelling.
  • Cancel under the fare’s schedule and claim on insurance if your reason is covered.
  • Ask your agency; it can see your fare rules and talk to the line for you.

Selling or Transferring a Cruise: FAQ

Can I sell my cruise if I can’t go?

Not in the way you would sell a concert ticket. You can ask the line for a guest substitution where its rules allow it, usually with at least one original guest staying on the booking, or cancel under the fare’s cancellation terms.

Is a name change the same as a spelling correction?

No. Correcting a misspelled name so it matches a passport is routine; replacing one person with another is treated by lines such as Norwegian and Carnival as a cancellation plus a new guest.

Do cruise credits transfer to other people?

Future cruise credits are generally tied to the guest they were issued to. Read the terms on your credit before promising it to anyone.
